Short Story: Drivers Education

Drivers Education

“Let go of the wheel.”

I looked around to see who said that and saw a car driving next to mine.

“Let go of the wheel,” said a man who sat in the passenger seat of the car driving parallel to me.

“Let go of the wheel,” he said again as I noticed that the drivers seat was empty!  No one was driving the car!  This seemed like a crazy situation to be in so I sped up before that nut crashed into me.

“Let go of the wheel,” said the man who was now beside me again!  The man looked vaguely familiar.  My curiosity was not peaked enough to risk my life so I put on the break and let the “robotic car” pass me.

It was no use.  No matter what I did the car stayed right along side of me.  Finally, in exasperation I said, “Who is driving your car?”

“Jesus Christ”, he answered.

“I don’t see anyone driving.  Why don’t you leave me alone before you crash into me and hurt me”?

“Jesus says that you will be safer if you let him drive.  As the passenger you will see more of the beautiful countryside.  He will also get you to your final destination on time.”

“I know how to drive just fine, thank you.”

“Do you need Jesus?”

“I don’t know, but I do know that I feel safer by not letting go of this steering wheel!”

“Do you believe in God?”

“Well, yes I do.  I believe that both the universe and I am here for a purpose.  I do not think we are just a fluke of atoms colliding in the right way.”

“Then if there is a God, and he has put you here for a purpose, then why are you in the driver’s seat?”

“I have to get to work, and to the grocery store, and wherever else I may want to go.”

“Jesus said, ‘But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”

“I knew you were going to say something like that.  Just get out of here!  I am doing just fine and don’t need you tell me what to do!”

“Do you have children?”

“Yes, what does that have to do with this?”

“Do you tell your children what to do?”

“Yes.”

“If you point to something outside of you and say ‘this is the law’, which you can only do if you believe in God, then to live by the law you must choose not to drive yourself.”

“I am afraid -- that makes me angry.”

“Can you make a law that is binding?  If you are honest with yourself and truly believe there is an external law, then you understand that you cannot drive according to the law successfully.  Let go of the wheel and let Jesus drive.”

“Oh.”

A single tear dropped from my eye.  Nothing more.  I let go of the wheel and lived to write this.  By the way, the scenery is beautiful.
