The "Reality Check" Articles

A column that gives you the "real" story behind the technology hype!

Updated: 23 November 2008

Starting a few months ago, I have been writing a new column for Goverment Computer News (GCN) called "Reality Check".  The column title/theme was created by the editor, Wyatt Kash, and I think it captures exactly the right sentiment for my style of writing.  I have always tried to dig beneath the surface of issues to uncover the pitfalls, deep insights and root causes.  Many of you know the story of pitfalls from my two books on the Java programming language's pitfalls.  In fact, you could even argue that my first book on C pointers is all about delving into waters where the surface calm hides potential dangers lurking in the deep.  I encourage you to read the columns and feel free to send me email using my new feedback form with your thoughts on the columns.  Also, if you have any suggestions on topics you would like to see me cover - let me know! (uses contactify to notify me)

Here is the column's front page and these are the articles with a brief commentary on the content:

  1. Before you leap to Web 2.0, Try Web 1.0 - this article is all about transparency and how it is a foundational underpinning of the web and information management.
  2. Standards: See the Forest and the Trees - this article is all about data standards and how difficult they are to do well.
  3. SOA: finding a killer app - this article demonstrates how federated query, if done right, is the killer app for SOA!
  4. The Battle over Rich Internet Applications - why are the IT titans battling over RIA Platforms?  Find out now ...
  5. Next article is on the iPhone ... stay tuned.
  6. New: Just did an article on User Scenario-based design (see download page for a presentation)!  Hope you like it!
