Oberon Theme Song and Metadata

Esprit de corps!

We just completed a strategic planning Offsite of Oberon Associates, Inc. senior leadership.  At dinner on Friday night, our CEO, Jodi Johnson, commented that it would be great for Ev Nelson (a colleague who plays the guitar) and myself to sing a song at our company picnic.  I replied that we should have an Oberon theme song.  Well, driving home the next morning I began thinking about all the various meanings of Oberon and how I would knit them together into a song.  You can download and play an .mp3 version of the song by clicking here.

Here are the lyrics and chords:

O’ Oberon by Michael C. Daconta

O’ Oberon,  Take Me Along

On your rocket ship to the moon,  Woooohhhh

C                  D                     G

On your rocket ship to the moon…

O’ Oberon, Take me Along    X 5

In the song, there are 6 references to the meaning (or semantics) of Oberon and 2 literary references.  I will give a copy of one of my books to the first person to correctly guess all 8 references.  You can email me at mdaconta@oberonassociates.com.

Also, I recorded the .mp3 file with a lame microphone hooked up to my laptop.  I have been thinking about going the whole nine yards and getting a new mac with garage band.  If you have suggestions on adding drum rolls, special effects, and other enhancements -- please email me.

Ok, back to technical stuff.  In my opinion, digital music is the best example of metadata and an intuitive proof of its benefits.  Without metadata, the iPod (and every other mp3 player) would be worthless.  A raw mp3 file without its descriptive information is one dimensional and almost counter-productive.  It is counter-productive in that music is very personal and elicits strong emotion.  People count on the metadata to direct them to the desired effect they want the music to produce.  This is why genre, artist, and year are such powerful metadata attributes of the song.
