Besides the metaphysical aspects of the Bible there is also a treasure trove of practical wisdom that should be studied and learned regardless of whether you believe it is divinely inspired (Note: I have tagged some passages if they are on subjects that some may find offensive).
- Proverbs 5:8-9 "Remove thy way from her, and come not nigh the door of her hourse: Lest thou give thine honour unto others, and thy years unto the cruel." This is a warning against unchastity that contains the basic idea that you should not cheapen yourself. Don't "give yourself away". Whatever happened to family honour? To take pride in who you are and what you were put on this planet to do. You can be assured that it is more than just physical pleasure. <Sexuality> Note: I am not saying that no one should ever have premarital sex. That would be hypocritical of me. What I am saying is that it should never be the foremost thing above relationship, integrity and caring. </Sexuality>
- Proverbs 5:15 "Drink waters out of thine own cistern, and running waters out of thine own well." I love this passage. I remember discussing dating with my brothers and making an analogy to fishing. I would say, "if you are concerned about the type of fish you are catching, don't fish in a sewer." In other words, it is better to look for relationships in places that are healthy and where you find things in common beyond just physical attraction - community groups, fitness programs, church groups, etc.
- Provers 5:22 "His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself, and he shall be holden with the cords of his sins". Sin holds you down. You tie yourself down with your transgressions. In my experience, you know when you are doing wrong. Doing that leads to you sabotaging yourself. If you feel evil, you act evil. It can become a nasty cycle of self-destruction. I have seen this behavior in many people. And what is the cure? Integrity. An honesty that pervades every fiber of your being.
